In the U.S., Cinco de Mayo is synonymous with margaritas and Mexican food. But few people know the origins of the holiday. We’re here to shake things up with the real story… and some Cinco de Mayo tequila cocktail recipes that go way beyond margaritas.
What Is Cinco de Mayo, Anyway?
Cinco de Mayo commemorates the 1862 Battle of Puebla when the Mexican army defeated France during the Franco-Mexican War. Contrary to common belief, it’s NOT Mexican independence day — that’s celebrated September 16, and occurred 50 years before the battle between France and Mexico in which the young nation emerged as victor.
Cinco de Mayo is also a way bigger deal in the U.S. than it is in Mexico… sorta like how our Irish neighbors scratch their heads at how much we love St. Patrick’s Day (and we love St. Patrick’s Day).
3 Tequila Cocktails For Cinco de Mayo
So, now that you know a little more than the average partygoer, we thought we’d offer you some classy cocktails that rise above the margarita melee. Don’t get us wrong; we love a good margarita, but sometimes, it pays to show up as an innovator.
Here are 3 tequila cocktails for Cinco de Mayo that aren’t margaritas.
Sip pretty in pink with a paloma, a combination of tequila, grapefruit juice, agave nectar, and seltzer with an optional salt rim. Just combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker and pour. Want to amp it up a notch? Sub the selzter with new Polar Seltzer Strawberry Watermelon. You’ll look sophisticated AND have your thirst quenched when you gently correct your friend about the origins of Cinco de Mayo. Sip. Smug. Repeat.
Sriracha Bloody Maria
You’ve brunched with Bloody Mary, but have you met her cousin, Bloody Maria? She has all the tomato juice (we recommend subbing in V8 for that extra vitamin kick), horseradish, and spice you’ve come to love, but with the added smokiness of tequila instead of vodka. We made our own DIY Bloody Mary mixer with 2 teaspoons soy sauce, 1/4 teaspoon lemon juice, 1/4 teaspoon sugar and a dash of Sriracha to kick things up a notch!
