We talked to nutritionist Jenna Gorham, RD, LN, about how getting healthy food delivered by Boxed simplifies meal prep and supports a healthy lifestyle.
As a dietitian, one of my main goals is to help make healthy eating easier. A great place to start is keeping your kitchen stocked with healthy foods and tools so you have quick but satisfying options when hunger hits. Keeping your pantry stocked with things like whole grains, canned beans, and frozen fruits and veggies makes it easy to throw together a healthy meal in no time. Boxed makes it simple by delivering many of your pantry essentials right to your door. Here are a few of my Boxed favorites:
1. Olive Oil
Olive oil is my oil of choice and a staple in my house, so it’s always a good bulk purchase. Known for its popularity in the Mediterranean diet, olive oil is a good source of omega-3s and has anti-inflammatory properties. I use it for salad dressings, marinades, and in everyday cooking.
2. Whole Grains
Whole grains are another pantry staple. They’re high in fiber, B-vitamins, magnesium, and more. Aim to make half the grains you eat whole grains because they contain more fiber and other nutrients compared to white and processed grains. The fiber in whole grains helps to fill us up and keep us full longer by slowing the digestion of the carbohydrates and the spike and fall of our blood sugar. My favorite whole grains from Boxed are: Prince & Spring quinoa, Bob’s Red Mill whole wheat flour, RiceSelect Texmati brown rice, Barilla proteinPLUS Pasta, and Barilla whole wheat pasta.
3. Old Fashioned Oats
My weekday breakfast go-to is another whole grain. You’ll always find Quaker Old Fashioned Oats in my cupboard. I bought them in my last Boxed order and will be stocked for months! Try making your oatmeal savory with veggies and eggs or sweet with berries and cinnamon. A few of my favorite toppings are natural peanut butter, frozen blueberries, Greek yogurt, and chia seeds.
4. Almond Butter
Nut butters like almond butter make a healthy snack or addition to any meal because of their healthy fats and protein. Add to oatmeal or smoothies, sauces and soups, or spread on toast or apple slices. I try to choose brands without hydrogenated oils and just nuts and salt for ingredients.
At only $23, this spice rack comes with 20 spices and is a killer deal! I have this spice rack myself and love the variety. Spices are an easy way to make healthy eating easier. Instead of seasoning your foods with excess salt, sugar, and fats, spices add great flavor with no calories or negative health effects.
6. Sparkling Water
Sparkling water like Polar Seltzer is a great alternative for those trying to kick the soda or sugary beverage habit or for those who don’t like plain water. Many people don’t drink enough water and this is a great way to stay hydrated. Any brand that is just carbonated water with natural flavors is great, although LaCroix is my favorite!
Full of heart-healthy fats and protein, nuts make a satisfying and healthy snack. One serving is ¼ cup, so be mindful of your hunger and portion sizes. Boxed’s private label, Prince & Spring, offers a variety of nuts including almonds, mixed nuts, and peanuts. Aside from healthy food, Boxed also supplies a few of my favorite kitchen tools to help make healthy living easier. I love the mixing bowls with covers, food storage containers, Vitamix, silicone kitchen utensils, and cutting mats.
