Friday is National Popcorn Day, a day when we honor the transformation of humble corn kernels into the light and airy snack eaten at movie theaters and living rooms across the globe. But the history of popcorn reaches back beyond the days of film; in fact, popcorn is one of the oldest snacks in the world. Popped kernels discovered in a cave in New Mexico in the 1940s were found to be 5,600 years old. (We’re betting those tasted a bit past their prime.) Long before Christmas celebrations involved stringing popcorn to decorate trees, the Aztecs used popcorn to decorate their clothing, and some experts even argue it was productive crops like corn that made the rise of such civilizations possible. So next time you’re criticized for having wine and popcorn for dinner, you can tell your critic that you are just the last in a vaulted line of people who make civilized snack choices.
Popcorn really exploded (cough) in popularity when the first commercial popcorn machine was built in Chicago in 1885, after which the snack appeared at fairs, circuses, and homes as a light, satisfying snack to reach for when hunger struck. But just because a snack has been around for thousands of years doesn’t mean there aren’t new ways to enjoy it. Check out these three popcorn hacks for National Popcorn Day and let us know what you think in the comments!
Everything is better with Nutella… including popcorn. In this recipe from Kim Beaulieu, Nutella is a total scene-stealer. We dare you to take your eyes of the bowl. We made it with Skinny Pop and used our own organic brown sugar, Hershey’s Milk Chocolate, salt, pure vanilla extract, and, of course, our two-pack of 32 oz. Nutella. Because you know the only thing better than popcorn made with Nutella is dipping that popcorn in more Nutella. Just sayin’.
